Day 1: Mon 12 Oct - Home to Maroochydore

Drive: 194km
18-28-24-26 degC

After the Winton trip, which we enjoyed immensely, we were itching to once again hit the road. Having seen a nice chunk of the Qld Outback, Greg suggested we take a break in the Big Smoke for a few weeks. First stop the bright lights, sun, surf and sand of the Sunshine Coast, Maroochydore to be precise.

As we left home on a Monday, and due to a relatively short drive, we were able to squeeze in a bike ride (Greg MTB Wens road bike) before we deapparted. To Greg’s surprise Mac rode this morning, despite his little health episode on the Biggenden ride last Saturday. You can’t hold a good man down. Glen was there too, with no affects from the long ride.

After the ride we finished off the lockdown of the house and waved goodbye to the roos, guinea fowl and birdies. The birds will miss their twice daily feeds from us, but they have plenty of other people to choose from and besides the bush is full of flowers at the moment.

We were tempted to stop at Gympie for lunch but decided that it’s one of the most RV unfriendly places in the country. Absolutely nowhere to park easily with a van so we drove straight through to the Maroochydore Beach Holiday Park, our home for four nights. As it was 1:30pm, and the worms were biting, we did a quick set-up and went for a walk in search of lunch. We realised it wasn’t a Thursday or Saturday (our normal eat-out nights) but as we are on “holidays” we lashed out. Being in the big smoke we had more choices than you could poke a skewer at. As we walked towards the main restaurant area, we saw a Sizzlers. As they’re closing up shop soon and we hadn’t been to one for donkeys ages, we thought we’d give them one last go. Unfortunately we found out why they’re closing down, the salads were nice but everything else was pretty terrible. They’ve been around for about 50 years, you’d think they would have worked out how to cook a steak and chips over all those years. We won’t miss them when they close.

We then walked to Sunshine Plaza to have a wander around the shops. It was all fairly quiet. Back to the van, via Cotton Tree, to finish setting up, exercises and admin.
